to make you feel as comfortable and cared for as if you were staying in our own home.

At the heart of Bitra are the people who make it what it is today — a cozy, welcoming guesthouse filled with care, character, and Icelandic warmth.

Ágúst, or Gústi sterki (“the strong one”), is a lifelong plumber and skilled handyman — always ready to help with whatever needs fixing, whether it’s a flat tire, a leaky roof, or heavy lifting. There’s nothing he can’t do; he has that famous Icelandic “Þetta reddast” attitude — everything will work out. Known for his sense of humor (and a fair share of dad jokes) and his friendliness, he’s a social butterfly who loves chatting with guests. His English sometimes sparks a few laughs… or confusion, but that’s part of his charm.

Bríet is the heart (and the horsepower) of Bitra — a no-nonsense, get-things-done kind of woman who embodies the true Icelandic valkyrja spirit. She has a keen eye for creating warmth and beauty, and her touch is what makes Bitra feel so cozy and inviting. Strong, resourceful, and full of heart, she somehow manages to do everything for everyone — the quiet force that keeps Bitra running and guests feeling at home.

Bitra is the kind of place where family steps in when needed — everyone helps out in their own way, and that’s just how things are done here. Over the years, their kids have all been part of Bitra in one way or another — from lending a hand around the house to guiding guests and helping behind the scenes. During the busy seasons, they’ve also welcomed wonderful staff who bring great energy and care, quickly becoming part of the Bitra family. And as for the grandkids — they’re especially fond of the cookie jars.

Together, Bríet and Ágúst have made Bitra their own — a guesthouse shaped by hard work, warmth, and the simple wish to make people feel at ease. We can’t promise sunshine or calm winds, but we can promise a warm welcome, a good night’s sleep, and the feeling that you’ve found your home away from home in Iceland.
