Kerlingarfjöll

Kerlingarfjöll is a mountain range located in the highlands of Iceland, known for its rugged beauty and geothermal activity. Situated in the central part of the country, Kerlingarfjöll offers a unique and otherworldly landscape that attracts nature enthusiasts, hikers, and photographers from around the world.

The name "Kerlingarfjöll" translates to "The Old Woman Mountains" in Icelandic, derived from the striking cone-shaped peaks resembling the profile of an old woman. The range consists of several volcanic peaks and colorful rhyolite mountains that create a dramatic and picturesque panorama.

Exploring Kerlingarfjöll offers a range of outdoor activities. There are numerous hiking trails that take you through the mountainous terrain, allowing you to witness the geothermal wonders up close. The trails vary in difficulty, catering to both experienced hikers and those seeking a more leisurely walk. We have listed a few here below as well as a trail to a nice hot spring to soak in after good day of walking.


Hveradalir Valley Trail

The hike begins at the car park near Hveravellir, a geothermal area situated between two glaciers, Langjökull and Hofsjökull. From there, you embark on a moderately challenging trek that spans approximately 10 kilometers (6 miles) with about 400 m elevation gain. As you traverse the trail, you'll encounter bubbling mud pots, hissing steam vents, and pools of steaming water, creating a truly unique atmosphere.

Hveradalur Ring Trail

This hike takes you to the main area of the trail above, you can drive from Kerlingarfjöll base up to the parking lot and from there it is about a 4 km hike to go around the whole area.

Ásgarður Hot Pool

Nothing like soaking in a hot pool after a long day of hiking. A 20 minute walk from the Kerlingarfjöll base you will find this hot pool. There are no changing rooms so it’s just all out in the open.
